The Mental Models That Shape Our Decisions

Introducing the concept of mental models and their significance in shaping our understanding and decision-making.

Aidan Brotherhood

Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's right-hand man, once said:

“80 or 90 important models will carry about 90% of the freight in making you a worldly-wise person.”

Mental models are the frameworks we use to understand the world.

They’re the lenses through which we see problems, opportunities, and challenges.

And like any tool, they can either sharpen our ability to cut through the noise or, if ignored, dull our perception.

Mental models are our internal maps.

They help us navigate complex decisions, whether in business, relationships, or life itself.

One powerful mental model is Occam's Razor

It suggests that the simplest solution, the one with the fewest assumptions, is often the right one.

We often default to adding layers of complication to our decisions.

But sometimes, the answer is as simple as removing what's unnecessary.

Then there's First Principles Thinking, a favorite of innovators like Elon Musk.

Rather than reasoning by analogy—looking at how others have solved a problem—we break things down to the fundamental truths.

What are the core elements?

What is the raw material of the issue at hand?

From there, we rebuild our understanding, free from the constraints of conventional wisdom.

Another model worth mentioning is Inversion

Often, the best way to solve a problem is to think about what you should avoid.

Instead of asking, "How do I succeed?" ask, "What could cause me to fail?".

This shift in perspective uncovers hidden traps and blind spots, making success a byproduct of avoiding failure.

These are just a few examples, but the key takeaway is this: mental models shape our decisions, whether we're aware of them or not.

The more models we understand, the more tools we have at our disposal.

And with the right tools, we can carve out paths that others might miss entirely.

So, how are you navigating the decisions that define your life?

Perhaps it’s time to add a few more mental models to your toolkit.

Because the decisions we make today shape the opportunities we have tomorrow.

And in the end, it's not just about having the right answers, but about asking the right questions, armed with the right mental models.
